Isartor - A Tiny Symbol of rebellious Bavaria

Isartor, which locates at the east side of the city centre of Munich, hasn't drown that many tourists comparing to the other two city gates.
It's probably because it's not that famous, or is it just because that most of visitors are already exhausted after shopping from Karlsplatz to the Tal?

Isartor stands on the end of the Tal (Tal 50) and distinguish the Isarvorstadt and Lehel.
According to the plan of the first german emperor of Holy Roman Empire, Ludwig IV, to build a second city wall, it was finished in 1337.
For now, it's the only one of the three ancient city gates, which still has the main tower.
Since the end of 14th century, Isartor had been made as the main entrance of the Salt Street. However, at the begin of 19th century, the city council was considering to tear it down. Thanks to Ludwig I. and his architect, Gärtner, it was remained.

During the second world war Isartor was seriously damaged, and only after more than years rebuilding we are now able to see it.
Beside as a symbol of one of the three ancient gates in Munich, there're also Karl-Valentin-Museum and café in the building.
On the other hand, there's another spotlight, which is quite noticed:
On the west side of the main tower, there's a clock, which walks otherwise. This clock was built on 4th November 2005 to memorize the famous comic actor Karl Valentin; however, it suits also an ironic sentence from Willy Brandt, "In Bavaria the clocks walk otherwise", which, of course, was meant to show ironically that Bavaria always surprises us with "unique" political decisions. But I think, Bavarian do take this say as a compliment.

Next time, when you visit Munich, beside of shopping, don't forget to visit this ancient city gate and that tiny symbol of rebellious Bavaria!

German Unendurable I - Deutsche Post

In the last few weeks parts of taiwanese journey were updated,
but this week, rabbit Wei would like to write about something else again and decided to name this series of articles: "German Unendurable"

What kinds of shxxs have occurred to rabbit Wei, who was born and raised in Taiwan?!
Today, let me introduce you one of the unendurables - Deutsche Post!

Deutsche Post,

Deutsche Post, I believe that most of people who have ever stayed in Germany know it very well.
Even tourists need to handle with them because of postcards...
However, Deutsche Post has nothing to do with german stereotypes from taiwanese opinion, such as being on time, high efficiency and good service etc.!

Let's take a look!

[Noon break for three hours]

That's right! This kind of stuff, which should only happen in ancient Taiwan, old country side or under southern Italian burning heat, still occurs in Munich, which actually locates in long latitude. There's even no difference next to Olympia Park, where a lot of tourists visit! Rabbit Wei always sees old ladies rushing with wheel chairs to the post office, in order to send their packages before noon, or even worse, a long long queue at 2:50 in front of the main gate... Comparing to the quality of service and efficiency of Taiwan Post, I believe our taking-turn noon break policy is much better. After all, the most of office workers can also only go to post office in their noon breaks!

[You won't get that repair done without years]

Stop saying that it takes always too much time to get taiwanese roads repaired! Come and see Germany! Even just a stair next to the student dormitory in Olydorf took almost three years! A main road next to Bonn has taken more than five years! And how about Italy? Less than ten years is normality! We should be happy about it that we don't need to wait for 15 years to get a new underground line in Taipei!
Because of the low efficiency of Deutsche Post, they do set up an automatic machine to sell stamps, except of a lousy design, which allows you only get stamps instead of money back, it's always broken! Every time I pass by, it shows "defect" on the screen, days after days, it's still there! That means: "We don't care how long it takes, just get in the queue after our noon break!"

[The worst postman and custom service]

Without discussing if the character in Cape No. 7 is real or not, at least we are able to get an apologize from the manager of the post office in Taiwan! Because rabbit's dad has worked in post office for his entire life, so rabbit does know what means a real and right quality of post service.
(Unbearable 1) Rabbit Wei once stayed at home for all day and waited for a package. Until 5 PM, it showed just online "No one's at home, so it couldn't be delivered"! There was even no note in my mailbox!
(Unbearable 2) One of rabbit's neighbors once got a note on his door, "On the balcony". Seriously? Is that really the right thing to do to throw customer's package to their balconies just because they weren't at home?
(Unbearable 3) One day, rabbit's mom told rabbit to check a package, which was sent from Taiwan a week ago. However, the website showed "unrecognized Adress, couldn't be delivered, sent back to Taiwan" I really want to print the send note on a poster and throw it to the postman's face, and ask, which part of this note couldn't you understand? I have lived here for almost three years and my parents always filled all the private information on that note, including cell number, which you guys have never called! Is that a joke or just an useless design on your DHL notes?
(Unbearable 4) And then, I called custom service immediately. What I got is: "It was sent back to the central station, I can't do anything." He was even trying to hang on as soon as possible and kept saying, "Is that ok, Mr. Lin? Is that ok, Mr. Lin?" Have you lost your mind?! Of course it's not OK!

Anyway, the zero efficiency and corruption of Deutsche Post are already in every level of the company. Every employee would only tell you that they aren't responsible and throw your problems back and take your money away! I keep wonder, if german people cannot even handle and protest this kind of "small" issue, how can you actually be possible to believe that you will actually get something once you walk on the streets and ask Government for more salaries? Comparing to Deutsche Post, which still needs its own profits to run, the Government would probably care less about us down here.

Some thoughts after the day

I'm astonished by the Photo-Taking technique of the waitress, it took me a long while to try to fix it!
The day before yesterday was 11th May, it was also rabbit Wei's birthday.
Lion Xu took rabbit Wei to a beer hall for dinner. Even though it was quite loud in there, we were still enjoying with those candles and a world of just two of us!

In these kinds of special days, such as birthday, it always makes me wonder, how difficult it is to understand or explain the human emotions! Especially the love between you and your better half and the parental love:
28 years ago, a freshman from Ximending (who were nearing to become a monk...) and a country-girl from Shuangxi (she names herself so!) had never thought about that, from this moment, this date, 11th May, would have been so special ever since!
Also 28 years ago, a handsome young man from Berlin training for Marathon (could you tell that? hehe) should've had never thought about it either, his better half was born that morning on the other side of the world!

Even the names are different, these two kinds of loves are so strong that they let one person love the other one so deeply and support him/her with no condition. I have never thought of a world without three of them, no, is that I cannot imagine or I refuse to imagine? I only know that, through my heart, in an almost perfect world there must be always places for them!

Destiny is a weird thing, which brings us together: If dad had become an architect, if mom were stolen by the other country-guy, if Yong Xu hadn't looked for a job in Munich... I wonder, how's everything going with other Massimos in all those parallel worlds. If there's a way to contact them, except of trying to make them all feel a little bit jealous, I shall yell as well: "I am, so really happy!"

Thank you for being in my life, MOM, DAD, MY LOVE!

IV German in Taiwan - Taipei and YiLan IV

In the next two days in the North, except of celebrating rabbit's mom's birthday, we had also been to many places!

"European style is taking off?"

This day, lion Xu and rabbit Wei had been to Mr. Brown's castle in YiLan.
Lion: "If they didn't write chinese characters on the wall, I would think that I were back in Europe..."
Rabbit: "Well, this kind of european style is quite popular in Taiwan."
Except of brunch and selfies, we also visited the Kavalan Whisky Factory.
Lion: "Whisky?! I have never heard there's made-in-asia whisky!"
Rabbit: "Taiwanese don't actually reject alcohols... After all, whisky sounds so... mm... exotic!"
Lion: "You can tell that Taiwan is willing to absorb different cultures and try to make an innovation from it. It's much better than isolationism!"

"In Taiwan, there're surprises in every corner!"

Then we had been to Jimi park next to the YiLan station.
Lion: "You see? I know Taiwanese love colors!"
Rabbit: "Yes! I think it makes everyone more energetic!"
Lion: "And you guys love taking photos..."
Rabbit: "Well... my mom and my dad are experts..."
Rabbit's dad: "Yong Xu! Come! Stand right there, I will take one photo for you!"
In order not to starve ourselves, we stopped by SanXing for lunch!
Lion: (Looking at the extremely green fields) "How come I feel like being back in Bavaria..."
Rabbit: "Are you thinking about moving here after retirement? hehe"
(Lion and rabbit are both city-born-child, countryside is just enough for vacation. To live? I think it's more difficult than climbing up to the sky...)
Lion: "If rabbit's moving to the countryside, then he must live alone!"
So far rabbit's mom can speak basic English with lion Xu, but rabbit's dad is just not good with languages... (He cannot even speak mandarin without taiwanese grammar...) Then you guys might wonder, how rabbit's dad and lion communicated with each other, once they were alone...
Lion Xu and rabbit's dad were smoking outside of the restaurant (tztztztz)
Lion: (pointing out those green onion pancakes) "What are those?"
Rabbit's dad: (using poor English) "ah... eggs with... mm... vegetables... together..."
Lion: (expressing a really confused look)
Rabbit's dad: "Never mind! It's taiwan pizza!"
Yes, we almost let our meal out of our mouths, when we heart this perfect translation, but, "taiwan pizza" does become one of Lion Xu's favorite taiwanese food!

"No wonder rabbit Wei can eat that much! Taiwanese are talented to eat!"

For the birthday party of rabbit's mom, we went to Tao Ban Wu. Beside of the drama when rabbit's mom met the special guests from Germany, there was a discussion of eating in Taiwan.
Stefan: (Looking at the menu) "So we just chose one or two from all of them, right?"
Rabbit: "Of course not! You have choose one from each of them."
Markus: (shocked) "We cannot eat all of them!"
Rabbit: "Ah! We will be just fine!"
Lion: "You guys didn't go to hotpot last time... You can't imagine how much they taiwanese can eat..."
After dinner, we went back home and continued to celebrate.
Rabbit: "What do you want to drink?" (Already bringing all beers and white wine out of the freezer)
Stefan: "We ate that much, if I drink beer..."
Rabbit: (Pretending not to hear and gave him one) "So, another one is for Markus."
Stefan and Markus: "..."
Rabbit's dad: "So, there's still beef jerky here!"
Rabbit's mom: "There're cookies as well! I will open that bottle of rice wine too!"
Lion: (Looking at germans) "Now you know, why rabbit Wei can eat THAT much!"

"You have to come here to feel it!"

Next day, we had been to JingTong first.
Lion: "This tiny old station is really cute! It's even made with woods!"
Rabbit: "That's right. We're going to take a special train right now."
Lion: "Then I will bring this ticket back as souvenir!"
Even the weather wasn't really good, tourists were still everywhere in ShiFen.
Lion: "Wow... Don't tell me that they're all chinese..."
Rabbit: (Trying to listen carefully) "No, not all of them... There're japanese and korean as well."
Lion: "What are those flying things over there?!"
Rabbit: "Lanterns! We can try to make one later."
After the first experience of writing calligraphy for Lion, we had been waiting the right moment to stand between the tracks and let our wishes fly.
Lion: "Isn't that actually kind of dangerous? What if the trains comes?"
Rabbit: "I guess it would be ok, they have fixed time schedule."
Lion: "Your dad is running to take a photo of the running train again..." (worried)
As we were staring at our lantern flying...
Lion: "I always thought that lantern is just a lightning thing in ancient time. It's kind of surprising that you can use it to make wishes!"
That evening we went to cantonese dim sum restaurant with two friends.
Lion: "I had never expected that dim sum can be this delicious!"
Rabbit: "Right? It's hard to find a real asian restaurant in Europe..."
Lion: "And now I know why you guys love to have tea!"
Rabbit: "Why?"
Lion: "Because it's super good!" (Another sip) "In Germany, most of people think that tee is only for, well, when you get sick..."
Rabbit: "haha... probably you don't have that many choices..."
Lion: "But, there's defect here!"
Rabbit: "What?"
Lion: "The duck is cold."

Comments from rabbit:

As an international country, it's easy to get access of european culture in Taiwan; therefore, some companies would change building-style to attract more customers. Mr. Brown Castle is a good example. The quality of food and service isn't changed, but the building is already another spotlight. I personally think it's a good idea. Some probably thinks it's too mechanism, but if you've been to Europe, you can tell that there's extremely little asian culture to be seen. Embrace of multi-culture should be an advantage rather than disadvantage, right?
On the other hand, there's no lack of innovator in Taiwan, it all depends how the society is going to find them. Taking Kavalan as an example, there're more than just tea and GaoLian. (Kavalan Whisky has won so far many international prizes.)

We were taught to be courageous enough to try new things, no matter it's another path of career or another language, even trying different food! If you don't take that first step, you will always live in your own imagination. Like Lion Xu, if he didn't try that taiwanese pizza, he would never know how delicious it tastes, then there would be alway a hole in his Taiwan-journey. Just go for it! There might be another surprise behind the next corner!

"Eating is as important as an Emperor", I believe many taiwanese are pretty familiar with this sentence! Eating does play an important role in our culture, no wonder that chinese, french and italian cuisines are named the three biggest cuisines in the world. In Germany, rabbit Wei sometimes brings german and taiwanese friends to try some asian restaurants, all-you-can-eat hotpot is one of them. I still remember Lion Xu's face, when he saw that all taiwanese people were taking another plate after another...
One part of taiwanese hospitality is providing rich and delicious food to our guests. We don't pray before eating, we don't say "Guten Appetit", but "Eat! Eat! Have some more!", and we help you with chopsticks! Even when we see our neighbors on the street after dinner, we greet them saying "Have you eaten already?"... Rabbit Wei doesn't know the real reason why we say so, probably it was difficult to get enough food in the past, so we taiwanese feel that having enough food is the most important thing in the world! Maybe it's the training we took all the time during our childhood, I think our taiwanese stomach should be one of the biggest in the world..., haha!

Why do we travel? For the beautiful view? For the exotic food? If that's so, we can just ask for a postcard, surfing on the internet or just go for an exotic restaurant crossed the street. It's the process you need to experience, the tension of preparation and the touch once your feet standing on a different land. You can smell different flavor and taste different ups and downs, and in the end, you can bring all the memories back home! If you have never been local, you can't never understand, where these astonishing cultures come from. As Lion Xu, who came to ShiFen to get to know the beauty of lanterns and the sweet of tea. No matter it would be a compliment or a judgement, it shall be definitely an unique experience.
On the other hand, I thought the cantonese duck is always served cold... I should probably ask my friends in Hong Kong then, haha!
